Biblical Truths of This Lesson in Focus
• Jesus is the only Savior and only He can take away the sins of the world (v. 29). Be prepared to encounter people
who believe there are many ways to God.
• We should invite people to investigate Jesus’ claims.
• Identify those you know who have not yet met Jesus.
• Plan ways to witness to people you know—invite them to Sunday School, worship, or some event where they can be
exposed to the gospel. Befriend them, engage them in conversation, and tell them what Jesus has done for you.
• Don’t wait to start witnessing until you have all the answers. Deal honestly with people’s questions as best you
can but always keep pointing them to Jesus (vv. 45-46).
• Many people will trust Jesus when we invite them to meet Him.
• Be aware that the results of our telling others about Jesus are not always immediately apparent.
• Be willing to take the initiative to witness. God wants to use you to bring people into the kingdom.
Conceptual Study: Lamb of God (vv. 29,36)
The title “Lamb of God” anticipates the sacrificial death Jesus would die. This wasn’t just an ordinary lamb but
rather “the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world.” At issue here are the twin concepts of sacrifice and
innocence. In Isaiah 53 the Old Testament prophet foresaw the suffering servant in Christ so that the “sin of the
world” might be dealt with once for all. By invoking the concept of the unblemished Passover Lamb (Ex. 12) and
intertwining it with the Suffering Servant, John the Baptist painted a masterstroke of the substitutionary, pure,
costly sacrifice by which Jesus would remove the barrier of sin and spiritual death and offer humanity restored
fellowship with the Father.
